Although primarily a hockey and football city, Ottawa has a very deep and rich baseball history. Beginning in 1898 with the Ottawa Wanderers, continuing with the multi time champion Ottawa Senators of the Canadian League in the 1910s and culminating with our current team, the Ottawa Titans of the Frontier League.
The first high level Baseball team to call Ottawa home in over 50 years was the Ottawa Giants. They were the AAA Affiliate of the New York Giants and given life when the Jersey City Giants were relocated for the 1951 season.
Ottawa had lost their NHL Franchise in 1934, leaving the Ottawa Rough Riders of the CFL as the only major sports draw in town. This would initially change with the Border League. An Ottawa teamĀ would join in the late 1947 season as the Nationals, play two seasons as the Senators and switch back to being the Nationals for their final season, winning three championships, leading the league in attendance each time.
When the Jersey City Giants needed a new place to play, the success of the Ottawa Senators made the city seem like a perfect home, so they were purchased by Tommy Gorman (who was a founder of the NHL and a two time Stanley Cup winner) and relocated to Lansdowne Park in Ottawa.
The team would finish 62-88, good for 7th place and attract 117, 411 fans (also good for 7th) before switching affiliations and becoming the Athletics the following season.
